As of last Friday we have a new addition to our family, little Nathaniel.
That morning Mandy told me today was the day. I went to work at 6am so I could use as few hours of leave as possible. It would've been better to just stay at home. At 6:30am Mandy texts me saying her water broke and it's time to go to the hospital. While I was on my way home she got Toby ready and dropped off at daycare.
When we got to the hospital her contractions were non-existent when compared to the ones she had with Tobias. We spent the next 12 hours waiting for the contractions to kick in. The doctor was concerned about infection so she suggested to induce. Well, that was okay for a little bit, but even on pitocin her contractions were getting farther apart. Eventually, it started working and it took only three pushes before little Nathan was brought into the world.
I was very surprised with how quiet this little baby is. He only cries when he is hungry and even then it is nothing comparable to Toby when he was born. We were both shocked to see a full head of dark hair on him as soon as he was born. Genetics is a funny thing. Toby was born with a little bit of blondish/white hair and blue eyes. Nathan was born with a full head of dark/black hair and dark colored eyes.
We were not sure how Toby would react to his new little brother. Mandy's parents brought him by the hospital to see Nathan, but Nathan was getting a bath. When Toby came into the room he just kept saying "baby" and looking around the room. He wasn't interested in mom or dad. I took Toby over to the nursery to see all the babies through the window. Toby then saw all the babies and his first response was, "baby shush". So I guess we don't have to teach him to be quiet when Nathan is sleeping.
After Nathaniel's bath we brought him back to the room to meet Tobias. Immediately Toby wanted to kiss and hug little Nathan. Side hugs weren't good enough for Toby. He tried climbing on top of Nathan to give him full-on bear hugs.
Mandy's parents then took Toby to their house until Friday so we could get used to having a newborn in the house again. This included relearning things like, we need to check his diaper more often because he can't tell us he needs to go to the bathroom or his diaper needs changed like we're used to with Toby.
Hopefully when Tobias comes back and is around Nathaniel he will still be loving and affectionate. We've been brainstorming things to do with Toby so he doesn't feel left out and still has one-on-one time with us.
